Strabismus Surgery

Today started early for us, with a 5am start time in order to make it to the surgical center by 7am. We made it, Parker was checked in, and we had visits from the anesthesiologist, the nurse anesthetist, surgical nurses, and our ophthalmologist. Our little sunshine was, of course, smiling and laughing and charming anyone she could (as long as mommy and daddy were close, obviously). She was taken back, and Rob and I made the trek to the waiting room to do just that.

Less than an hour later we were called to a consult room, and the doctors let us know Parker did great! No blood pressure drop this time, and they were able to find a good vein without too much trouble (still had to stick her a couple times though). The ophthalmologist let us know that she took a look at Parker’s retina while she was “in there” and didn’t see any signs of FEVR at this time, which is good news. I’m not sure how that affects the next surgery, but we’ll follow up in a week and likely get more answers. This specific surgery went well, and they only had to tighten muscles on her one right eye. We won’t know for awhile how successful this surgery was, it’ll take a few days for her eyes to settle down after the surgery. But we’re optimistic!

She woke up as she did with the MRI, lots of tears and cries, but snuggles and a bottle helped soothe her. Back into pajamas and we were on our way home. Parker fell asleep walking out to the car and barely stirred when we buckled her in.

We got home, she took a short nap with mommy in the rocker, then noticed her favorite toy on the floor and was ready to play!

From this picture you can tell her eyes are swollen, but you can’t tell how bloodshot they are, only that she looks like an alien. We’ve been told to expect both whites of the eyes to turn blood red, likely bloody tears, and some crusties after waking. We’re keeping diligent on pain management, and have to keep her from rubbing her eyes, which…. come on now. So we’ve ordered floaties since they don’t make a “cone of shame” for babies. As of now, she’s been in great spirits, has had a little lunch, and is back to playing with her toys (although I’m sure there another nap lurking shortly).

Thank you for all the thoughts, prayers, messages, and support so far. We cannot begin to express how much y’all are appreciated!
